In the words of Mrs. Priyadarsini Joh:-

“Greeting to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am humbled as I stand before you this afternoon in awe of God’s grace and delighted by the confidence posited by you to elect me to this key portfolio of the Bombay YWCA.

As I reminiscence on my journey within the Y, I have so much to be grateful for. I entered the Y world as a young 26 year old, the warmth I experienced here was palpable. The senior members ensured I felt at home and soon was integrated into the ‘Y’s committees and activities. I cannot thank enough the spirit of camaraderie and support that exists within the ‘Y” organization. The senior members have provided leadership and direction to the organization with practical wisdom and a service mindset. Let me use this opportunity to thank all the past presidents and members of the board for the unwavering focus, active engagement and sacrificed service. Further I would like to thank the staff of the Y for your strong commitment, sincere efforts and excellent work ethic.

I am blessed to be part of such a group of dedicated, immensely talented, fully committed members of the Y to serve this great organization and together achieve the vision espoused by the Y.

As we progress the baton we would do well to focus on the following priorities for the ‘Y’ during 2016-17.

  • Existing Members: Leverage the skills, capabilities and time of the senior members of the Y to advance the organizational goals and objectives.
  • New Memberships: Enhance the memberships particularly infuse young members into the Y and strengthen the Y-Deepa such that the rich heritage of the senior members of the Y is effectively passed on to the younger generation in shaping the community at large.
  • Social Action: Enhance our relevance to the society by the following specific segments:
    • Target and campaign against drug trafficking by concerted efforts of the diverse constituents of Y
    • Focus on Justice beyond borders and ensure we activate and contribute to a society that is founded on earnestness, equality and equanimity where principle of justice becomes the bedrock of every action of every enterprise

The task at hand is large and time to deliver is minimal. I count on your continued support, consistent efforts and constant engagement that we be the beacon that we are called to be in this dark world and bring the light of Jesus to our every touch point. Thank You.”

We at The Christian Observer wish Mrs.Priyadarsini John the very best in her efforts at the YWCA.- Dr.Jayakar Ellis, Editor

According to Romans 12:3, God entrusts each of us with a measure of faith. He gives each of us this gift of faith because without faith, we cannot please Him:

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Heb. 11:6).

We must come to God believing first that He exists and second that He is a rewarder of those who earnestly seek Him. Most believers do not doubt God’s existence. What they doubt is the second part; they doubt God’s involvement with them on a personal level. They fear He won’t reward them. They doubt His goodness.

When we think like this, it causes us to hold back portions of our hearts and retain control of our lives. We do this because we are afraid. Fear torments us with questions: What if I earnestly and diligently seek Him and He doesn’t reward me? What if God rejects my efforts as not good enough? What if He asks for more than I can give Him?

We will always doubt God’s goodness in areas where we are not sure of His character. And doubt will cause us to bury what God has given us in the soil of unbelief. Nothing reproduces or multiplies in that environment; all remains lifeless and dormant.

Our faith is meant to be used. Its purpose is not to accumulate things but to receive and grow in the knowledge of God. Faith is given to each of us that we might mentally grasp and learn to handle the goodness of God. It is given so that we may experience Him as a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

If you’re struggling to have faith, find a quiet place and pray with me:

Father God, I want to be a person of faith. Please show me your goodness and love like never before. Help me to grow in the understanding of your character so that doubt will have no place in my heart. I want to hear and heed you. Thank You for the grace that empowers me to grow in faith, and for your peace in the process. In Jesus’ name, amen.

All Praise and thanks be to our Almighty God who is our loving heavenly Father for showing His great mercy in giving me life and health to share my testimony with you today.  The promise that says, I will live and not die but glorify God in the sanctuary is being fulfilled this day.

From Dec 2013, my family and I suffered the ravages of cancer.  Finally in May 2014 after six months of pain and wrong diagnosis (of gastric or UTI), I was diagnosed with colon cancer (through colonoscopy) but they said it was just the onset of malignancy. In spite of the various scans and tests done before surgery, it was only when they operated that the surgeon found that the tumor had grown much and was not operable.  We were then referred to the oncologists who suggested us to do a PET-CT scan to confirm the extent of this disease.  This scan confirmed the dreaded disease at stage IV with metastasis (spread) to liver.  Then we began the journey of chemotherapy for the next six months.  Meanwhile God did a loving miracle of instantly removing severe pain from the tumor area.  Also, contrary to what people experience, the side effects of chemo (24 rounds) were minimal in my case.  This greatly strengthened our faith.

In January 2015, the medical oncologist declared that my tumor had regressed greatly and recommended me for a surgery to remove the tumor.  I was operated on the liver in February but I became critical suddenly and was operated again within 10 days.  I had to stay in the hospital for a month’s time to recover from the back-to-back operations.  In spite of the two surgeries, they were not able to remove the primary tumor in my colon.

I was again recommended to continue chemotherapy for another six months.  So in August 2015, I had to go through another major surgery to remove the primary tumor.  It was a long and complicated surgery.  As I came out of anesthesia, I had a profound awareness of coming back to life and only two thoughts – God gave me life and all the sincere prayers kept me from going down into the pit.

Let me tell you that cancer is truly a difficult disease to handle.  Believe me when I say, that unless God’s loving grace is with us and family, friends and believers like you support and encourage continually, the battle over cancer is really hard.  My husband gave me constant encouragement and personal attention.  Till now, I have been treated at five different hospitals and have undergone innumerable tests and scans apart from the four major surgeries.  This was a huge financial burden for which we were totally unprepared.  Since my husband had just quit (before my diagnosis of cancer) from his corporate job to serve in an NGO, we even could not avail medical insurance.  So much so that we had to sell our own house to meet the mounting medical expenses.

Though we do not have answers about why we had to undergo this season of pain and suffering, we have learnt that God is certainly NOT the author of sickness and pain.  We know that by His Stripes we are already healed (Isa 53:5).  Also, what the enemy meant for evil, God has turned it out for good.

This Easter, Our Wonderful God Jehovah, who has said, “I am the Lord that healeth  thee”, has given us all the more reason to rejoice . This is a testimony to the Resurrection Power that on March 21, 2016 exactly 22 months from the diagnosis, my chemo doctor, gave the verdict that I don’t need chemo anymore since I’ve come out of cancer!!!

My family and I want to encourage you to pray and specially hold onto God’s living and powerful promises which give us life, healing and eternal life. Our God Emmanuel indeed is always with us.  He loves and wants us to enjoy the abundant life that He has given us in Christ Jesus.
